She is both reviled
and revered, Britain’s most controversial and longest-serving modern
prime minister. Margaret Thatcher, who led her country into war, and
through upheaval, died Monday after a stroke. She was 87.
Known universally as
the Iron Lady for her steely determination, Thatcher was Britain’s first
and only female prime minister. She had been frail and in poor health
for years, and hadn’t been seen in public for months. Thatcher’s death
was announced in a statement from her children.
Born the daughter of a
grocer in Lincolnshire, Thatcher was first elected to the House of
Commons in 1959. Two decades later, she was leader of the Conservative
Party, and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and
Northern Ireland. more
